Assessment of the structural diversity of forest habitats

The Mediterranean forest habitats are very complex systems that provide a wide array of goods and services to the populations. This multifunctionality presents great opportunities to managers, but also a great deal of responsibilities, mainly related to the necessity to grant the sustainability of the ecosystems. This difficult balance implies, at every moment, the necessity to maintain attractive economic revenues from the forest areas, assuring, at the same time, the fulfillment of its main protective functions (soil protection, water fluxes regulation, carbon sequestration, etc.), its conservation values and its social values. Therefore, every activity developed within these spaces must be based on a very deep understanding of all the variables involved and must respect all of the above listed functions. Only in this way can the sustainability of these precious zones be granted.
