Expected Outputs

Outputs of the project

The PROFORBIOMED project is implemented by means of series of tasks divided in six Work Packages (WP). The first one (WP1) is dedicated to the project management and coordination.

WP2: Communication

  • 16 major events
  • 40 workshops (at least 2 per partner)
  • 13 Technical guides covering the project outputs, pilot experiences, best practices and implementation and transfer of technologies and tools

WP3: Capitalization and long term lasting effects

  • A set of proposal of standardized practices and policies affecting 5 key policies to develop the forest biomass chain
  • Setting of clusters in the rural areas (at least 2 per country)
  • Agreements: With public administrations, for further collaboration on the development of a forest biomass chain (at least 19). With private forest owners and associations for the promotion of forest biomass (at least 10% of the area)
  • Guidelines and operational recommendations for the implementation of a forest biomass chain and the development of clusters
  • A model on public support scheme and financing opportunities in forest biomass chain

WP4: Setting up integrated strategies for the development of renewable energies

  • Guidelines and operational recommendations to fill the current gaps identified
  • Protocols to assess potential impact of forest biomass harvesting and extraction on biodiversity
  • Assessment of the forest biomass available for energy production
  • Pilot experiences on 9 issues

WP5: Renewable energies as an opportunity for local and regional economies

  • Building up of clusters in partners regions (at least 10)
  • Strategic report on renewable Energy as an opportunity for the MED regions setting strategic orientations to implement policies
  • Pilot experiences on 4 issues

WP6: Intelligent energy management systems at local and regional levels

  • Implementation of the smart grids concept in at least 10 regions
  • Guide: improvement of logistics related to the supply of biomass using smartgrid concept

Project results

The most relevant result is the promotion of renewable energies in Mediterranean rural areas by the development of an integrated strategy for the use of forest biomass, helping MED areas to recover the forest biomass potential, to develop the technical and legal aspects and to involve the key stakeholders in a forestry biomass production chain. It will foster the development of rural areas by achieving specific results:

  • Assessment of the forest biomass available for energy production in a social, economic and environmental sustainable way in MED regions
  • Transfer and adoption of know-how on sustainable forest management including forest biomass production chains and its use as an energy source
  • Improvement of the rural areas governance, development of clusters and agreements between public and private actors in 10 MED regions and the implementation of polices for the development of renewable energies
  • Development of a model of public support to sustainable forest management and biomass production
  • Identification of financing mechanisms for public and private investments
  • Increase of incomes for forest owners through the biomass production chain reducing risks and improving the conservation status
  • Creation of new economic opportunities

On the other hand, it guarantees more secure supply of energy with mobilisation of wood biomass from forests and will enable the adoption of the smart grids concept to the renewable energy chains.
